Geometric Embroidery

After the conversion of the Berbers to Islam, Morocco was greatly influenced by Islamic geometric motifs and architecture. Young artists will learn about the history of geometric patterns and embroidery and learn how to transfer a traditional Moroccan pattern onto burlap. After learning a basic running stitch (or back-stitch for older kids), students will stitch through their burlap with child-safe embroidery needles and then mount their pieces onto felt, which they will later be able to frame or use as coasters. Early finishers will be given geometric-shaped collage materials to create mixed media art.
